The Society of Hospital Medicine interviews Avital O’Glasser, M.D., about how the work of hospitalists expanding outside the hospital to rehab centers, long-term care facilities, hospices and more; O’Glasser says, “… There are just so many ways that hospitalists may be contributing to the care of patients within the hospital and beyond. I’ve been calling myself an outpatient hospitalist for probably five or six years and doing outpatient work only for almost as long."

An OHSU study in nonhuman primates, led by Kristin Sauter, Ph.D., and Charles Roberts, Ph.D., finds exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19 may lead to chronic health impacts that, in some cases, may become apparent only years later; Roberts says: “You don’t have to have a very severe case of COVID in the first place to have potentially long-term change."

Jane Zhu, M.D., publishes an editorial in JAMA Health Forum alongside an economic evaluation of that found private equity acquisition of gastroenterology practices led to higher colonoscopy prices, utilization and spending with no commensurate effect on quality. She says one interpretation of the findings may be that private equity acquisition focuses on reducing inefficiencies, improving access by expanding practice capacity, and increasing throughput. “Another interpretation may be that PE acquisition is focused on the strategic exploitation of market and pricing power. The latter may have less of an impact on clinical measures like quality of care, but potentially, both strategies could be at play.”

A collaboration among OHSU and three other universities produces mathematical models that could begin to unlock how groups of cells will respond to various cancer therapy combinations.

STAT News reports on new clinical guidance from the Alzheimer’s Association on using certain blood tests to help in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Joseph Quinn, M.D., says, “I think this is reasonable. They’ve really thought through this very carefully in terms of making a diagnosis.”
