Everyday Health reports on an OHSU-led study that finds the use of GLP‑1 receptor agonists for weight loss in adults without diabetes was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing early age‑related macular degeneration. OHSU’s Casey Eye Institute led the study showing the association. “We were quite surprised by the strength of the association between GLP-1 medication use and the lower risk of developing macular degeneration,” says Benjamin Young, M.D.

A collaboration among OHSU, MultiCare Health System and Duke Health uses physician-led governance and data analytics to transform operating room bottlenecks into growth opportunities.

A study led by OHSU’s Casey Eye Institute finds that use of GLP-1 receptor-agonist weight-loss drugs was linked to about 70% lower 10-year risk of age-related cataracts in non-diabetic adults: “These findings raise the possibility that GLP-1 RAs may differentially influence cataract pathogenesis depending on lens region, although the biological basis remains unclear,” the researchers reported.

OHSU President Shereef Elnahal, M.D., urges continued federal support for rural health care, emphasizing the crucial role these hospitals play in maintaining access for Oregon’s remote communities. “If we allow rural health care to collapse, the consequences are profound for families and communities,” he says.

A new OHSU‑led study shows a dangerous strain of E. coli can block the gut’s defense mechanism by preventing infected cells from being expelled. Senior author Isabella Rauch, Ph.D., says: “This study shows that pathogenic bacteria can block infected cells from being pushed out… It’s a completely different strategy from what we’ve seen before."

OHSU researchers examine a potential link between GLP-1 use and the development or progression of age-related macular degeneration, finding it may offer ocular benefits compared with other weight loss drugs.
