Verywell Health reports that omega-3s can protect the brain, especially among people with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease, citing a recent OHSU-led study. Lynne Shinto, N.D., M.P.H., notes that the study found the protective fatty layer around the brain’s nerve cells was more well-preserved in participants who took omega-3 supplements: “Once the integrity of that sheath is compromised, it’s harder and harder for the neurons to function and to be resilient.”
